  • Bold Vision: Elluswamy highlighted Musk’s foresight in betting on AI and vision systems over traditional sensors and maps, as well as initiating work on humanoid robots in 2021.
  • Strategic Leadership: Elluswamy praised Musk’s combination of technical understanding, perseverance, and hard work, which have been instrumental in establishing Tesla as a leader in AI.

This acknowledgment underscores the importance of visionary leadership and teamwork in driving technological advancements.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has publicly acknowledged the contributions of Ashok Elluswamy, an Indian-origin engineer, to the company’s advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and autopilot technology. Elluswamy was the first person hired for Tesla’s autopilot team, and his work has been pivotal in the company’s success.

In a heartfelt note on X (formerly Twitter), Musk expressed his gratitude towards Elluswamy, stating, “Thanks Ashok! Ashok was the first person to join the Tesla AI/Autopilot team and ultimately rose to lead all AI/Autopilot software. Without him and our awesome team, we would just be another car company looking for an autonomy supplier that doesn’t exist. BTW, I never suggested that he say anything and I had no idea he wrote this until I saw it 10 minutes ago!”

Elluswamy’s Journey and Contributions

Elluswamy, in his detailed note, highlighted the significant milestones achieved under Musk’s leadership. He recounted how in 2014, the autopilot project began on a very limited computer system, which had only 384 KB of memory. Despite the seemingly impossible task, Musk pushed the engineering team to develop lane-keeping, lane-changing, and other complex functionalities. By 2015, Tesla shipped the world’s first autopilot system, far ahead of its competitors.

“In 2016, Tesla started doing all of the computer vision required for Autopilot in-house instead of depending on external vendors. Many people thought it was insane to bet the product on developing the vision system from scratch within a few months, which had taken other companies a decade or more. Yet, we achieved this target within eleven months. This was a strategically important move that started the development of a strong AI team at Tesla,” Elluswamy wrote.

Pioneering AI and Custom Hardware

Elluswamy also detailed Tesla’s innovative approach to AI and hardware development. Under Musk’s guidance, Tesla began creating custom silicon to efficiently run neural networks, a move that was initially met with skepticism. This custom hardware, designed in 2017, went into production in 2019 and remains highly competitive.

“He [Elon Musk] was the one who bet on vision and AI to solve autonomy instead of relying on sensor crutches and high-definition maps,” Elluswamy noted. This bold strategy has led to Tesla’s significant advancements in supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, allowing their cars to handle complex city driving tasks with AI.

Vision for the Future

Elluswamy highlighted Musk’s foresight in starting work on humanoid robots at Tesla in 2021, well before the rise of AI examples like ChatGPT. He praised Musk’s combination of deep technical understanding, perseverance, and relentless hard work, which have positioned Tesla as a leader in real-world AI.

“I could go on, but plainly, Elon is critical for Tesla’s success in AI. It is his combination of deep technical understanding, insane perseverance and relentless hard work that have positioned Tesla to be a leader in real-world AI. Elon’s technical intuition to make these important decisions way before others see it is unmatched. If not for Elon’s ambition, Tesla might have dwindled to become just another car company,” Elluswamy concluded.

This recognition from Musk underscores the importance of visionary leadership and dedicated teamwork in pushing the boundaries of technology. As Tesla continues to innovate, the contributions of individuals like Ashok Elluswamy remain crucial in shaping the future of autonomous driving and AI.
